I didn’t see it with my own eyes

The Aquarama is gone. For the first time in a long time, there was an unobstructed view of the south side of the Cargill grain elevator, as the Aquarama, more recently known as the Marine Star, was no longer docked along side it. It seems that the rumors were true, and that it is headed for India to be chopped up and melted for scrap.

While this will certainly tug the heartstrings of the many people who sailed on the ship, most Buffalonians won’t miss it. Most people just wanted to see the rusty hulk gone, as the outer harbor is slowly beginning it’s renaissance and this was just blight along it. I certainly would have liked to see the ship resurrected and put to use since it was reportedly in decent structural shape, but past efforts to save it were fruitless. I’m sure the owner was tired of watching it devalue and paying to have it docked along the Lackawanna shore, and decided it was time to cash out. Can’t say I blame him.

Update: Reader “Erik” sent me three photos of the Aquarama passing through the Welland Canal on it’s way out to sea:
