Aquarama still on the move
Regardless of the fact that nobody’s quite sure where the Aquarama/Marine Star is headed, it is still on the move. Check out the user photos at boatnerd.com to see it passing through the Brockville Narrows of the St. Lawrence River today around noon, and past Morrisburg, NY just after 4pm.
iI have lived in Muskegon MI. ALL MY LIFE, I REMEMBER THE AQUARAMA AS A VERY BIG MYSTERY. SHE WAS “HUGE” COMPARED TO THE MILWAUKEE CLIPPER WHICH WAS PARKED JUST THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MART DOCK FROM HER. THROUGH THE YEARS OF JUST GOING OUT ON THE LAND POINT WERE SHE SAT AND JUST STARING AT HER, I DREAMED OF WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE TO TAKE HER OUT FOR A RIDE. IN 1988, THE BEACH BOYS CAME TO MUSKEGON TO PLAY, AND THEY PERFORMED RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE AQUARAMA’S DOCKING SITE. I’LL NEVER FORGET BRIAN WILSON TURNING AROUND AND POINTING TO HER AND SAYING “WHAT A COOL SHIP, LET’S TAKE HERE OUT FOR A RIDE.” A FEW FACTS I KNOW ARE THAT SHE WAS A LIBERTY SHIP AND ONLY MADE TWO TRIPS ACROSS THE ATLANTIC BEFORE THE WAR ENDED. THE TORE ALL THE UPPER WORKS OFF HER AND THEN TOWED HER UP THE MISSISIPPI TO MUSKEGON, MI. WHILE BEING TOWED INTO MUSKEGON LAKE, SHE DRIFTED NORTH INTHE LAKE AND BECAME VERY STUCK. THE TUGS COULD NOT GET HER OF THE BOTTOM, SO THEY FIRED UP HER ENGINES A POW SHE WAS FREE. TOWED TO THE FRONT OF THE MART DOCK. THE MCGEE FAMILY STARTED TO BUILD HER TO HER PRESENT STATE AT A COST OF OVER 8 MILLION DOLLARS. MUSKEGON COMPANYS DOING ALL MOST ALL OF THE WORK. FITZPATRICK ELECTRIC, VERSITILE FAB.ETC… SHE ONLY MADE 3 OR 4 TRIPS OUT OF MUSKEGON BEFORE SHE LEFT BUT THOUSANDS OFF MUSKEGONITES RODE HER. ON ONE OF THE TRIPS HER HUGE PROPPELLER RIPPED THE SIDE OF THE DOCK UP PRETTY BAD. “THE DOCK AND THE PROPELLER MARKS ARE STILL THERE 1-15-2008. BEFORE SHE LEFT MUSKEGON IN THE SUMMER OF 1988, THEY OPENED HER UP FOR TOURS. UNBELEIVABLE. MANY AREAS WERE ROPED OF “DO NOT ENTER” BUT ME BEING A YOUNG 28 YEAR OLD, I HAD TO SHE IT ALL. THE CAPTIANS QUARTERS WAS LARGER THAN MY BIG BEDROOM, WE OPENED UP THE DOORS TO THE WINGS ON THE BRIDGE AND CAUTIOUSLY WALKED OUT AAAAAHHHH!!!! 9 STORTY UP GULP! PS. WE WERE TOLD AS KIDS THAT THEY WERE BIG GUNS! ANYWAY, LOOKING DOWN FROM THE UPPER DANCE FLOOR TO THE LARGE DANCE FLOOR BELOW, YOU COULD JUST DREAM WHAT A FANTASTIC TIME A COUPLE COULD HAVE DANCING THE NIGHT AWAY AND CRUISING ALONG THE COASTLINES OF THE GREAT LAKES. IF ONLY I WOULD OF HAD THE MONEY. GOOD BYE PRETTY GIRL!!!!!!
