New camera and lots of snow
I finally bought a new camera – a Canon Digital Rebel XTi. I’ve been saving up for it for awhile, and my in-laws kindly gave me cash in lieu of an impossible to get Sabres jersey for Christmas, so the time was right.
Now that I have the camera, I need to take a lot of photos to get used to it. I’m still very much an amateur (almost all my outdoor shots were underexposed – a lot). I’ll probably keep my eye out for a photography class as well, or at least get some tips from other local photobugs.
Here’s a couple of my first shots…
Our cat, Isis, really doesn’t like people playing “his” piano.
(Well, ok, really I just caught him yawning, but he sure looks mean!)
I’ve had the same camera for a few months now. You’ve probably read this already, but new lenses help immensely. I really like the 60mm macro lens, but most of the pictures I’m taking with it currently are slide copies. Not really amazing photography… but I do get to play with it as it’s meant to be used from time to time.
I like the Flickr Camera Page for examples and inspiration…
Congrats on the new camera. I’m sure you’ll have fun learning all the features.
I think your kitty should hang out with mine. 🙂

OOOhhhh so you finally did it!! Yay!! Did you get the black or silver? Ed pretty much has his fully pimped out… http://flickr.com/photos/flyingdutchee/364895665/
I made my work buy me one (the XTi) since they weren’t gonna pay me to use my own gear on-site. Its a great solid cam, you’ll get many happy hours of use. So many happy hours in fact, that you’ll forget that you have a life, a family, and a job, LOL. Just beware: Canon lenses are not cheap, and neither are all the goodies that go with a dslr; you have just taken a deep plunge into a money pit!
May I suggest (when you have the $$) to invest in “L” glass and go for the 24-105 f/4 (I have this one) or the 24-70 f/2.8 – both have image stabilizer and are fantastically sharp and great in low-light. Both are excellent everyday walk-arounds and more!
You should also consider getting the Digital Rebel Field Guide (I’m sire they have an XT or XTi version out now). Excellent info, easy to read with great learning examples.
Good luck and have fun, Derek! 🙂
I got the silver because it was $15 cheaper. Looks good in either color to me. I ended up getting it with the 18-55mm kit lens, and the Canon EF 50mm F/1.8 lens.
I’d love to get a good image stabilizer zoom lens, but I’m going to have a lot of saving to do before I can afford one of those. Luckily, I have a big birthday coming up this year. 🙂
Thanks for all the pre-purchase help, Deeva and Mike!
Great pics! Your kitty is adoreable too:)
Wow, I thought I was looking at my late cat Zippo! Isis looks exactly the same…except that Zippo was missing one of those fangs. Made him look kinda goofy-mean. 🙂
